Rungwa River

The Rungwa River region lies at the heart of central Tanzania’s vast wilderness, a landscape defined by sweeping miombo woodlands, rolling ridgelines and wide, open floodplains carved by the seasonal Rungwa River itself. This is classic, untouched East African bush—remote, rugged and wild. The terrain shifts from dense, cathedral-like forests to broken kopjes and expansive savannas, offering hunters a constantly changing backdrop and a sense of true frontier exploration. During the dry months, the riverbeds, pans and springs become the lifeline of the ecosystem, concentrating game and creating exceptional opportunities for tracking on foot.​

This region is renowned for its rich biodiversity, home to some of the most sought-after species in East Africa. Big eland and roan antelope roam the plateau woodlands, while topi, sable, greater kudu, and hartebeest inhabit the more open fringes. Leopard are plentiful along the rocky riverine corridors, and lion are routinely encountered along the river courses. Plains game is abundant and varied, offering a full and rewarding safari experience for both dangerous-game and plains-game enthusiasts.
